Chiropractic Treatment for Migraines

Dr. Darlene Holland, D.C. of Central Virginia Chiropractic Center, Inc. performs chiropractic adjustments for migraine sufferers who have yet to find relief. Chiropractic treatment will not cure migraines, but it is one of the few ways to be proactive against migraines and help prevent them.  In someone prone to migraine episodes, a trigger can often be a misalignment, or subluxation of the spine.  Migraines can begin with tension in the neck, but even patients without migraines find keeping their neck free of kinks helps improve frequent headaches. Dysfunctional vertebrae in the neck can cause increased muscle tension and interrupt the nerves that control blood flow to the brain. Chiropractic adjustments relieve the pressure and tension that results in headaches, and keep the spine aligned to help it function at its best.

Regular chiropractic adjustments also help facilitate healthy blood flow and nerve function.  For a chronic migraine sufferer it may take weeks of consistent adjustments, but patients will experience a significant improvement in migraine frequency, intensity, or both.  Improving alignment of the bones in the neck and spine can prevent headaches and migraines, and adjustments also keep the body in balance.  Adjustments are a safe way to relieve tension and decrease the intensity and frequency of migraines without medication.

Spinal Decompression Therapy

Dr. Darlene Holland, D.C. of Central Virginia Chiropractic Center, Inc. heals patients dealing with problematic spinal discs using spinal decompression therapy.  Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy is a safe, targeted treatment for any herniated discs in a patient’s spine or nerves.  Injured discs in the neck and back cause pain, but can also affect the rest of the body.  Herniated discs often have a direct impact on the central nervous system, causing more pain to the extremities.  Our doctors can determine if spinal decompression is appropriate for your pain.

Spinal decompression is performed with equipment that resembles a table but has moving parts.  Patients lie on their back or stomach, depending on the location of the issue, and are attached to the equipment with padded straps so distraction forces can be applied to the spine.  A typical treatment alternates between applying distraction forces to the vertebrae and periods of partial relaxation.  The result is the vertebrae slowly and gently separating from each other.  This creates a vacuum effect that helps discs return to their natural position, relieving pressure from nerves.  A full treatment plan normally lasts about six weeks, and most patients notice a steady improvement during that time.

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body that is made up of individual nerve roots that begin from the spine in the lower back and branches out down the buttock and down the back of each leg. Portions of this nerve are attached to certain parts of the leg such as the thigh, calf, foot, and toes. When the sciatic nerve experiences trauma, the pain can range from mild to severe. When this happens, Dr. Darlene Holland, D.C. of Central Virginia Chiropractic Center, Inc. can develop a structured treatment plan.

When sciatic nerve pain doesn’t get better on its own, you will need to explore your treatment options to find pain relief and minimize future dysfunction. Usually, sciatica affects only one side of the lower body, but the pain may radiate from the lower back and down the leg. If you have pain in this area that is constant, as well as weakness or numbness when moving the leg or the foot, schedule a consultation with Dr. Darlene Holland, D.C., to discuss your pain management options.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS)

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) devices that Dr. Darlene Holland, D.C. of Central Virginia Chiropractic Center, Inc. utilizes have been advertised to increase muscle strength, to decrease body weight and body fat, and to improve muscle firmness and tone in healthy individuals. If you’ve been diagnosed with a condition that affects specific muscle groups, electrical muscle stimulation is an excellent way to manage pain.

Electronic muscle stimulation works by transmitting an electric current through the skin into the muscles and nerves. When the electrodes are placed on the skin, the device will contract once it reaches a certain level. The higher the level, the more the muscle group will contract. The muscle contractions caused by the device will have the same effect on your muscles as exercise has. Dr. Darlene Holland may use this equipment for patients who require muscle re-education, relaxation of muscle spasms, increased range of motion, prevention of muscle atrophy, and for treating other medical conditions which usually result from a stroke, serious injury, or major surgery.
